The empty Sea Island Tile Co. building on Lady's Island is getting new life as a veterinary clinic, according to contractor Clay Stanley.
Dr. Allen Henry and associates from the Beaufort Animal Clinic on Boundary Street will open an additional location at 391 Sea Island Parkway, which will be called the Broad Marsh Animal Clinic, according to Stanley.
Attempts Friday to reach Henry for comment were unsuccessful.
W. F. Stanley Construction and Management has spent the past month and a half cleaning up the building, and construction is expected to start when permits are issued Monday, Stanley said. The building has been empty for several years, Stanley said.
"That tile company had left everything in there, and there was like a million pieces of tiles to clean up," he said.
The building's tile facade, with a beach scene that includes a dolphin and palm tree, will be removed because it does not fit the new design, Stanley said.
He expects the building will be finished in about a month. The job will be an all-local project with developer Cory Johnson, Eagle Electric, Whitmore Plumbing and Brown's Drywall Services performing work, Stanley said.

Crews have spent the last few months cleaning, Patterson said, and permits were approved Thursday. He says the store should be ready in about a month.
