Three USC Beaufort athletes set school records in throwing events, and two more set personal-best times Wednesday at the Gamecock Open track and field meet in Columbia.

Freshman Ty'Chelle Freeman led the Sand Sharks with a second-place finish in the shot put, setting a school record with a throw of 13.04 meters. Freeman narrowly missed the NAIA "B" qualifying standard for nationals, which is 13.05 meters.

Sophomore Samantha Willcutt finished fourth in the javelin (27.35 meters), and sophomore Avery Singleton was sixth in the men's javelin (37.85 meters).

Seniors Frank Tinsley and John Stanas each ran personal-best times in the 800 meters. Tinsley finished eighth in 2:00.65, and Stanas was 19th in 2:06.23.

Senior Jessica Brown turned in a strong finish in the women's 800, taking fourth in 2:34.68, and freshman Chase Rhodus was fifth in the men's 5K in 17:32.55.

Freshmen Becky Hayden (1:06.42) and Meleah Powers (1:07.19) rounded out USCB's top-10 finishes by placing sixth and seventh in the women's 400.

Singleton is headed to Athens, Ga., this weekend to prepare for nationals in the decathlon, and the rest of the Sand Sharks will go to College of Charleston to tune up for the upcoming Sun Conference meet in Daytona Beach, Fla., on April 22-23.
