USC Beaufort thumps Voorhees in softball doubleheader

Published: April 5, 2012

Sand Sharks outscore foe 46-3

Everyone on the roster got a chance to contribute -- many of them in unusual roles -- as the USC Beaufort softball team swept Voorhees in a doubleheader Wednesday, winning 21-1 and 25-2 at Richard Gray Sports Complex in Hardeeville.

The Sand Sharks (27-6) emptied their bench early in both games, and they experimented with players in positions they're unaccustomed to playing late in the second game.

Freshman Hailey Grimoskas took advantage of a rare start in the opener, striking out seven in a five-inning one-hitter.

Freshman outfielder Sammi Shaffren and junior catcher Caitlin Vaughn led the offense in the first game with three hits apiece, freshman first baseman Maddie Byrd drove in three runs, and freshman third baseman Mariaha Sanborn hit a grand slam.

Sanborn added another grand slam in the second game, matching Taylor Triplett and Katie Rietkovich for the team lead with seven homers.

Three USCB pitchers combined on a two-hitter in the nightcap. The Sand Sharks pounded 19 hits of their own.

Shelby Zipperer and Rietkovich had three hits apiece. Sophomore Caroline Pastre, a pitcher, drove in two runs on a single in her first at-bat of the season. Zipperer, Rietkovich, Paige Adams and Chelsey Blasingame also had two RBIs.

Freshman ace Kristy Cook struck out five over two perfect innings to surpass 100 strikeouts for the season, and freshman Cara Jamerson allowed one hit and two walks over two scoreless frames for the win. Rietkovich made her collegiate pitching debut in the fifth, allowing two runs on one hit and walking three.

The Sand Sharks travel to Columbia College for a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday.
