Thomas Heyward Academy: The Rebels went 2-0 at the Santa Fe Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., before heavy rains washed out the rest of the tournament.
Thomas Heyward (13-1) was one inning into its third game when storms hit and canceled the rest of the event. According to Rebels coach Bob Layman, it appeared as though the Rebels and Bluffton High School were on a crash course to meet in the finals.
Thomas Heyward notched a 7-1 win over Suwannee High School of Live Oak, Fla., and then defeated Calvary Christian Academy of Fort Lauderdale, 9-2.
"It was a real good tournament," Rebels coach Bob Layman said. "These were good teams with good pitchers. We really stepped up."
Ashlie Layman had a pair of doubles and four RBIs against Suwannee, and also was the winning pitcher. She gave up six hits and no earned runs while striking out four in seven innings. Brianna Kelnhofer went 3 for 4, Taylor Ernestine was 1 for 2 with an RBI, and Jamie Malphrus also went 1 for 2.
In the win over Calvary Christian, Layman threw a two-hitter. She had seven strikeouts and allowed no earned runs.
Kayla Canavan was 2 for 4 with three RBIs, and Chandler Cook and Caitlyn Cooler each had two hits and two RBIs.
The Rebels play at Wilson Hall in Sumter on Tuesday.
BOYS LACROSSE
Hilton Head Island High 14, Socastee 8: Nate Jones had four goals and two assists, and Ross Lovette added four goals and an assist as the Seahawks headed into the playoffs with a win.
Nick Bautista and Thomas Farrell each had two goals and an assist, and Brent Stringer also scored for Hilton Head High (8-4), which expects to host a first-round playoff match Tuesday night.
Madison Gayle finished with eight saves in goal for the Seahawks, and Michael Stumm made one save.
BOYS GOLF
Hilton Head Christian: The Eagles had a team score of 310, good for fifth place after the first day of the 20-team Low Country Classic at the Plantation Course at Edisto. Hilton Head Christian trails leader Fort Dorchester by 13 strokes.
Bryson Nimmer led the way for the Eagles, carding a 75. Will Miles shot a 76, Kyle Weaver had a 77 and RJ Bartolomucci finished with a first-round 82.
The tournament concludes today.
