A 6-year-old Bluffton boy was taken to a Savannah hospital with head injuries after riding his bicycle into the side of a van Thursday, according to the Bluffton Police Department.
The child, who was not wearing a helmet, was distracted and did not see the vehicle pass in front of him, police Lt. Joe Babkiewicz said Friday.
The accident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. in the Baynard Park subdivision. Babkiewicz said the boy was exiting a cul-de-sac when he looked back for some reason and hit the passing van, which was pulling a trailer.
Neighbors administered first aid until paramedics arrived and took him by ambulance to Savannah, Babkiewicz said.
The boy was in stable condition Friday, he said.
An investigation determined the van driver was not at fault, and no charges will be filed, according to police.
Police refused Friday to release the boy's name. A copy of the incident report had not been "signed off on" Friday and would not be available to the public until Monday, Babkiewicz said.
