Prep Roundup, March 22: Hilton Head High wins pitchers' duel with Berkeley

Hilton Head Island High 1, Berkeley 0: Michael Haven singled down the third-base line with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday, bringing home Michael Perez with the winning run in Hilton Head Island High School's 1-0 victory over Berkeley.

The win moved the Seahawks (6-1 overall, 3-0 region) into first place in Region 7-AAA.

Jake Kizer (2-0) earned the win in relief for Hilton Head High, coming on to start the seventh and striking out a batter with two runners on base to end the top half of the inning.

Kizer relieved starter Andrew Dill, who gave up three hits and struck out four in six scoreless innings.

Berkeley (8-2, 2-1) only managed four hits, as did the Seahawks.

Seahawks outfielder Caleb Martin made a key defensive play in the top of the fifth, throwing out the potential go-ahead run at home plate to end the inning.

Hilton Head High plays at Bluffton on Friday.

Whale Branch 13, Bethune-Bowman 3: Ty Fields struck out nine in the win, a five-inning no-hitter, and Dee Delaney had two hits for the Warriors.

Whale Branch (3-2) hosts Bamberg at 6 p.m. Friday.

Thomas Heyward 8, St. Andrew's 3: Seth Jones pitched four innings for the win, and Bryan Lee Wade pitched the final three innings for the save.

J.D. Tuten was 2 for 3 at the plate for the Rebels (6-3, 3-0), who host Calhoun Academy at 6 p.m. Friday.

Cane Bay 5, Battery Creek 1: Hunter Higuet took the loss for Battery Creek, surrendering two runs in two-thirds of an inning. Justin Spurlock was 1 for 3 with a double and Shane Dixon, Rusty Willman and Shane Goude each had a hit.

The Dolphins (3-7, 1-2) host Lake Marion at 6 p.m. Friday.

Step of Faith Christian Academy 8, Orangburg Christian 7 (Tuesday): Josh Carter was 3 for 4, Josh Goodson was 2 for 4 and Justin Malphrus went 1 for 4 to lead the Chargers to the win. The Ridgeland school improved to 2-0 on the season.

JV: Wade Hampton 10, Battery Creek 5


Berkeley 3, Hilton Head Island High 1: The Seahawks took their first loss in Region 7-AAA. Whitney Halley went the distance, striking out five in the loss. Aileen Moore led Hilton Head's offense, going 2 for 2 with an RBI.

Hilton Head High (4-1, 1-1) plays at Bluffton on Friday.

Cane Bay 17, Battery Creek 2 (5 inn.): Tori Hill had two hits and two stolen bases in the loss for Battery Creek. Sara Cathey had the only other hit for the Dolphins (1-7 overall, 0-3 Region 7-AAA), who host Lake Marion on Friday.

Ashley Ridge 11, Beaufort High 0: Paige Deschaine struck out 17 for Ashley Ridge. Maddie Berry had the Eagles' lone hit. Beaufort (5-5, 1-1) plays at 6 p.m. Friday at Stratford.


Bluffton 7, Beaufort Academy 0: The Bobcats swept past the Eagles in the non-region matchup, winning every match in straight sets.

Bluffton (6-1) hosts Savannah Country Day at 4 p.m Monday.

Hilton Head Prep 162, Hilton Head Island High 163: Tyler Williams shot even-par 36 at the Ocean Course at Sea Pines to lead Hilton Head Prep to a one-stroke victory over Hilton Head High.

The rest of the Dolphins: Woody Woodward 37, Kyle Eichelsbacher 43, Russell Freed 46, Braxton Kirby 51.

Brooks Moody led Hilton Head High with a 2-over 38. The rest of the Seahawks: Chris O'Donnell 40, Andrew Orischak 41, Gavin Lindstrom 44, Zach Ruhlin 44, Brenden Fick 48.

Hilton Head Prep hosts Hilton Head Christian at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Ocean Course.

Beaufort High: Josh Fickes tied for the top score, carding a 1-under-par 35 at Dataw Island as Beaufort High finished third in a Region 8-AAAA match.

Fort Dorchester, behind matching 35s from Grant Waggoner and RJ Keur, won the meet with a 149 total.

Beaufort High finished at 173. Taylor Simonsen shot a 41, Tommy Earl had a 45, Patrick Watson a 52, and Kevin Feltner 56 for the Eagles.

Beaufort High hosts a county match today at Dataw.


Bluffton 7, Cane Bay 0 (Tuesday): The Bobcats opened play in Region 7-AAA with a victory, their first of the season.

Bluffton (1-3, 1-0) got two goals apiece from Akeel Crooks and Gerardo Garcia. Omar Govea, Ryan Blizzard and Harris Reeves scored the other goals. Crooks and Juan Servin had assists.

Chris Sullivan recorded the shutout, making four saves. Coach Josh Fox credited Mallie Sprouse and Davis Rosenblum with strong defensive play.

The Bobcats' next match is 7 p.m. Friday, at home against Battery Creek.
