Strive to Excel has dissolved, but details are scarce

Strive to Excel has officially dissolved, the S.C. Secretary of State's Office says, but details about how the organization's assets were disbursed are scarce.

The nonprofit mentoring group that long operated at Hilton Head Island High School ceased operations Dec. 31 after four months of controversy about its finances and board governance.

Renee Daggerhart, a spokeswoman for the Secretary of State's Office, confirmed that Strive's articles of dissolution were filed Jan. 17, shortly after her office cited Strive for three violations of the state's Solicitation of Charitable Funds Act.

Strive had 15 days to file an amended tax return and correct the violations to avoid a fine. It filed the amended return, but Daggerhart would not say whether the office had finished its review or if Strive still will be fined.

Strive's former board secretary, Tom Gardo, said by email he no longer is the organization's spokesman and cannot answer questions. Tax attorney Bob Arundell said by email a liquidation committee took all steps to ensure dissolution procedures were followed. He declined further comment.

Strive still must file its tax return for fiscal year June 1, 2011, to May 31, 2012, the Secretary of State's Office says. That form is due Oct. 15, unless Strive requests an extension, which it has done in the past.

In January, the S.C. attorney general asked former Strive president and CEO Tim Singleton for bank records and other documents, including board meeting minutes. Mark Plowden, a spokesman for Attorney General Alan Wilson, would not confirm whether the materials were sent.

Plowden has stopped short of calling the office's action an investigation but has said he cannot discuss a matter currently under review by the office, including the amount of Strive's assets or debts or whether its assets have been distributed.
