Guilford men, Centenary women win golf tournament at Dataw Island

Published: March 14, 2012

Dusty Roberts was determined to enjoy himself Tuesday afternoon.

After all, it wasn't like there was any pressure on him or the rest of the Guilford College golf team, which entered the final round of the TaylorMade-adidas Intercollegiate holding a 21-stroke lead over second-place Hampden-Sydney College.

"Today was more of a thing where we know that if we go out there and shoot a solid number then we couldn't be caught," Roberts said. "The golf course wasn't going to allow a team to go deep enough to catch us if we played solid."

Roberts was right. He and the rest of the Quakers -- who entered ranked No. 1 at the NCAA Division III level -- cruised to a 36-stroke win on the Cotton Dike Course at Dataw Island Golf Club.

On the women's side, Centenary College came out on top over four other schools to claim the title. Centenary shot team scores of 356 and 345 over the two-round event to win by 104 strokes over Ohio Wesleyan, which finished with a score of 418-387--805.

Guilford College shot 309-318-315--942 to claim the men's title while Wake Technical Community College came in second with scores of 331-326-321--978 to finish in second place. Hampden-Sydney came in five strokes behind the Eagles to round out the top three in the eight-team field.

"I'm glad we got that cushion, because it makes it a lot easier to play golf the third day," said Roberts, who finished tied for seventh after shooting a third-round 78.

Roberts was one of six Guilford golfers to place in the top 10 individually, which was highlighted by Noah Ratner, the No. 1-ranked player in Division III. The Asheville, N.C., native shot 77-76-78--231 to finish atop the tournament standings.

"I hit the ball very well," Ratner said. "I struggled with the putting a little bit. It's just amazing getting to play such an awesome golf course. They really have it set up tough for us, which is always fun."

Ratner said he only manged about five birdies over the two-day event, three of which came in Tuesday's final round. He started the morning with a birdie on No. 2 after hitting a nice approach shot about 4 feet from the hole.

The junior said the firmness of the greens proved difficult for several of the golfers, though it was nothing he couldn't work around.

"Sometimes you hit a shot and it's 3 feet from the hole and it ends up 20 feet," Ratner said. "You just have to suck it up, try to make the 20-footer and realize it's hard to hit it close."
