A Marine accused of stealing a Port Royal firetruck last month and striking and killing a pedestrian was charged with two federal crimes in December.

However, the Marine officials who filed those charges are releasing few details.

Pvt. Kalvin Hunt, 26, of Sumter was charged Dec. 19 by military police with trespassing and larceny in connection with a crime Dec. 8 at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, according to air station spokeswoman Lt. Sharon Hyland.

Hunt has not been stationed in Beaufort, according to military records, but he was allowed on base because he had a valid military ID, Hyland said. However, she would not elaborate on the incident that led to the charges, which still are pending in federal court.

Hunt also is appealing a bad-conduct discharge from the Corps handed down during a court martial in April, which resulted in his demotion from corporal to private, according to Navy officials.

Hunt worked as an F-18 jet mechanic, and his military career includes stops in San Diego; Pensacola, Fla.; and Jacksonville, N.C., officials have said.Hunt was charged last week with murder in connection with the Feb. 24 death of a pedestrian, 28-year-old Justin Miller of Port Royal, and 10 other offenses related to the theft of the firetruck and six wrecks on Ribaut Road.

He remains in the Beaufort County Detention Center after waiving his right to a bond hearing on the murder charge last week. His bond on 10 other charges related to the crash was set at $500,000.
