More than $20,000 has been reported missing by doctors at a Hilton Head Island medical office.

The discovery followed a financial audit at Heritage Medical Center that showed "irregularities on the books going back several years," Sgt. Robin McIntosh of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office said Thursday.

A further financial review by sheriff's investigators indicates more than $20,000 has vanished from the clinic, McIntosh said.

Details are scant because the investigation is active, she said. Attempts Thursday to reach doctors at Heritage Medical Center were unsuccessful.

No charges have been filed, and no arrests have been made, McIntosh said.

"All I can say right now is that they're working on it," she said.

A Sheriff's Office incident report says that on March 5, "Dr. William Petty and other members of the Heritage Medical Center reported a breach of trust at their practice."

Petty is a member of Heritage Medical Partners, a practice of internal medicine. Drs. Thomas Lenns, Paul Long, Michael Mayes and Andrew Binamira are also members of the group that operates the Heritage Medical Center on William Hilton Parkway.
