Bank of America announced its Beaufort Main Banking Center at 500 Carteret St. will close June 8.

A company spokeswoman declined to divulge specific reasons for the closure but wrote in a statement that "we constantly evaluate our retail network to ensure we are meeting evolving customer demand, and may add or consolidate banking centers as a result."

The nearest Bank of America branch to the Main Banking Center is at 2115 Boundary St. in Beaufort, and it will remain open.

Account holders recently received letters from the bank informing them of the decision.

The bank typically closes branches that do not have much traffic or where the installation of full-service ATMs could allow for consolidation of branches, the spokeswoman wrote.

Plans for the building after the branch closes remain unclear. Attempts Tuesday to contact Parker Barnes, the property's owner, were unsuccessful.
