A wreck Wednesday morning between the U.S. 278 bridges connecting Hilton Head Island and the mainland led to one person being airlifted to Savannah.

Two cars overturned near the J. Wilton Graves Bridge over Skull Creek at about 10:45 a.m., clogging traffic in the westbound lanes, according to Capt. Randy Hunter of the Bluffton Township Fire District.

One person was taken to a Savannah hospital by a LifeStar helicopter ambulance, Hunter said. He said none of the occupants was entrapped, but he was not sure how many were in the vehicles or their conditions.

The S.C. Highway Patrol and firefighters and paramedics from the Bluffton Township Fire District responded to the accident. Beaufort County sheriff's deputies helped direct traffic.

Attempts Wednesday to reach a Highway Patrol spokesman were unsuccessful, and no further information was immediately available from the agency's website or media hotline.
