From staff reports

HARDEEVILLE -- Perfection turned out to be commonplace Monday.

After watching USC Beaufort freshman Kristy Cook strike out 12 in a five-inning perfect game in the opener of a doubleheader against Fisher College, sophomore Caroline Pastre went one better in the finale -- she struck out 13 of the 15 batters she faced -- giving the Sand Sharks back-to-back perfect games as they swept the Falcons 19-0 and 34-0.

The Sand Sharks thrived at the plate, as well. Mariah Sanborn was the hitting star of the first game with three hits, including a home run, and four RBIs. Maddie Byrd added a homer and two RBIs.

In the second game, Kalin Martin had three hits, including an inside-the-park home run, and four RBIs, Taylor Triplett had a home run and three RBIs, Paige Adams had three hits and drove in four runs, and Sam Boland and Erin Wilson each drove in three runs.

But for all the offensive fireworks -- the Sand Sharks pounded 56 hits in the doubleheader -- the pitchers stole the show, combining to strike out 25 of the 30 Fisher batters.

GOLFERS FINISH FOURTH

The USC Beaufort women's golf team shaved 11 strokes off its first-round total to earn a fourth-place finish Monday in the Newberry College Invitational at Moss Creek Golf Club.

The Sand Sharks posted a team score of 328 in the final round on Moss Creek's South Course, giving them a two-day total of 667. Armstrong Atlantic (628) ran away with the team title, followed by host Newberry (650) and Lander (657).

Sophomore Kendra Collins of Bluffton and junior Kelli Nakano led the Sand Sharks in the final round with scores of 5-over-par 79. Collins ended the two-day event tied for fifth at 14-over 162, and Nakano tied for 12th at 166.

Freshman Tori DeGroodt (T19th, 169), senior Adriana Saavedra (T23rd, 172) and freshman Samantha O'Donnell (26th, 174) rounded out USCB's lineup.

Lander's Rachel Uremovich, a Hilton Head Island High School graduate, shot a 83 on Monday to finish 18th.

BASEBALL WINS 4TH STRAIGHT

The USC Beaufort baseball team rallied late to beat Fisher College 9-6 on Monday, the Sand Sharks' fourth consecutive win overall and their eighth in a row at Richard Gray Sports Complex.

Sophomore Erik Armstrong led the way with four hits -- three of them doubles, which ties a single-game school record -- and two RBIs.

Leadoff man Ty Main drew four walks -- also tying a single-game school record -- and scored three runs.

Winning pitcher Alex Graham (3-1) allowed one hit and one unearned run in two innings of relief.

The teams play a doubleheader at 11 a.m. today.
