Battery Creek senior headed to West Point
Battery Creek High School senior Michael Evans has received an appointment to the Class of 2016 at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
Evans is ranked third in his class at Battery Creek and has a GPA of 4.4. He's the treasurer of the school's student government and a mentor for younger students through the Gentlemen's Club.
Battery Creek Principal Edmond Burnes called him an "outstanding student leader," in a news release.
Evans said he was thankful to be selected.
"Even though it was a lot of work, I achieved success through the grace of God," he said in a news release.
Evans was nominated by S.C. Congressman Joe Wilson. His parents are Robert Evans Jr. and Jeannette Allan.
Evans, along with other prospective members of West Point's Class of 2016, will report to the school for the first time July 2.
OTHER Park University is offering a scholarship for the 2012-13 academic year for military families. Non-military family members of active duty military personnel can apply. High school and college students must have a GPA of 3.0 and must have not attended Park University for more than one year. The scholarship will pay for 15 credit hours. ACHIEVEMENTS Doug Plank and the school's robotics teams had success in the Southeast Regional Robotics Competition. The Juggernauts placed second, and the Scorpions placed eighth. Brian Barholf was the top scorer for the second year in a row. The Beaufort High Voices Choir earned a Superior Rating at the Lander University Choral Festival recently. The group was selected as the "Most Inspirational Ensemble " of the festival. Jordan Norris is choir director.

ENRICHMENT Advanced Humanities students will spend Friday night in the Mighty 8th Museum. Students will learn about World War II from veterans and take on the challenge of a bombing raid. They also will learn about the trials of being on the home front during the war.

EVENTS Students will participate in their third annual Jump Rope for Heart event from Feb. 27 to March 2. Students have been learning about heart health and collecting donations for the American Heart Association. Last year, the school raised $3,290. Broad River Elementary School will host its second annual School/Community Health Fair, "Managing Your Well Being," from 9 a.m. to noon March 10. Participants will include health services, community groups and safety organizations. There will also be entertainment, food, activities for children (face painting, clowns) and much more.
