Town of Port Royal police and Georgia authorities are still looking for a 25-year-old Columbus, Ga., man accused of fatally shooting a woman stationed at Naval Hospital Beaufort last week.

Investigators say they believe Leo DeAndre Scott fled Port Royal last week after shooting his ex-girlfriend, Velencia Compton, in the head during a domestic dispute inside the woman's Battery Lane apartment.

Compton worked at the hospital's branch medical clinic at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, according to base officials. She was a dental corpsman, according to her Facebook page.

Port Royal Police have not said what they think the two were arguing about or what might have prompted the shooting.

After the shooting, Smith fled in Compton's car with their 3-year-old son, Jayden, investigators said.

An Amber Alert was issued for the child, who was found in Columbus, Ga., after Scott dropped the boy off at a relative's house. The woman's vehicle was later found at a nearby Walmart.

Police believe Scott might still be in the Columbus area.

Columbus Police Chief Ricky Boren told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer this week that his officers have been searching homes where Scott might be hiding. However, they have been unable to locate him.

A warrant charging Scott with murder has been issued, a Port Royal Police spokesman said.

Scott has no prior arrests in Beaufort County but has had some previous run-ins with Georgia authorities, including an unresolved drug charge from December 2010, the Georgia newspaper reported.
