The Hilton Head Island High School sophomore feels it's his duty to knock down 3-pointers when his team needs them, and he was disappointed after not shooting well in recent games. But on Tuesday, the Seahawks' offense caught up to the high-level defense that boys basketball coach Ken Updike had been pushing all year.
Guards worked the ball inside out, moved the ball around the perimeter and enjoyed open looks against Battery Creek's zone. The result was a 62-45 Hilton Head High victory at the Palace.
The Seahawks established a season-high for points and hope to lock down either the third or fourth playoff seed from Region 7-AAA with three games remaining. Coltrane knocked down five 3-pointers en route to a personal-best 19 points.
"I hadn't been making them lately," Coltrane said. "I felt like I had to knock them down tonight."
Battery Creek coach Antoine Youmans said he thought if the Dolphins could get to 4-6 in region play, they might slip into the Class 3-A playoffs. But those hopes turned bleak Tuesday, after a 10-0 Hilton Head High run closed the first half and extended into the third quarter.
Before then, Battery Creek had pulled within three points and was showing life in transition.
"That really buried us," Youmans said. "Hilton Head played a great game. We didn't play well enough to win. We didn't play with a sense of urgency."
The Dolphins allowed the Seahawks those open looks in the zone, and on the other end, Hilton Head High's Michael Julian affected shots in the middle. He finished with five blocks, which served to slow Battery Creek's aggressiveness to the basket as the game progressed.
Foul trouble forced Updike to his bench early, allowing him to work younger players and offering encouragement he could use them in future game situations. The Seahawks have playoffs on their mind, but will have a fight by finishing with Lake Marion, Berkeley and Bluffton.
"We cant be satisfied with where we are now," Updike said. "We've got work to do."

It's rarely easy the second time around.
And Hilton Head High girls basketball team knew Battery Creek would play tougher, more composed than it had the first meeting this season. Seahawks coach Dave Greenberg was pleased with his team's composure on the road as Hilton Head High improved to 7-0 in Region 7-AAA.
"They've really improved," Greenberg said of the Dolphins. "They're beating teams that gave us fits."
The Seahawks enjoyed control during the second half
Senior Sabrina Drammis led the Seahawks with 14 points. Freshman Lauryn Bush added 13 points and on the other end helped lock down Battery Creek's Daisja Cannon.
Greenberg said he thought the Seahawks moved the ball well against the Dolphins' pressure. Late in the game, the margin allowed Hilton Head High's freshmen time on the floor.
"I knew it wasn't going to be easy," he said. "I thought our kids responded well."
