For many, the Super Bowl is a day to gorge while watching football. However, a local church will try to use the game to help those who don't get enough to eat on Super Bowl Sunday ... or any other day.

Christ Lutheran Church of Hilton Head Island is participating for the second year in the national Souper Bowl for Caring, a youth-oriented program that raises money and collects food to fight hunger.

About 10 kids have volunteered, said Silky Pylrik, coordinator of the church's program. They have pledged to give their donations to The Deep Well Project, which helps those in need by providing food, and funding for emergency rent and utility payments, prescriptions and making homes safer. Last year, her group raised about $600, Pylrik said.

"If people give generously to a good cause, maybe it will help their team win," Pylrik said.

The young volunteers will collect food and money Sunday and Feb. 5 at Christ Lutheran Church at 829 William Hilton Parkway.

The Souper Bowl for Caring started in Columbia in 1990 with 22 churches that raised $5,700. Last year, it collected $9.5 million and $2.7 million worth of food from 10,173 charities.
