The search for Hilton Head High's next football coach may be down to just one man.

Bradley Adams of Georgetown High School told the Sun News of Myrtle Beach on Wednesday that he was withdrawing his name from consideration for Hilton Head High's vacant coaching position, but Adams would not confirm that to the Island Packet/Beaufort Gazette.

That would leave B.J. Payne of Lexington, Ohio, as the lone remaining finalist. Payne -- who spent the last six seasons as head coach of the Lexington High Minutemen -- said Wednesday night that he had not yet been contacted by Seahawks athletics director Mark Karen.

Karen was unable to be reached for comment on the situation.

"Because of Mark Karen, Hilton Head was a situation I was looking into," Adams told the Sun News. "But my heart's in Georgetown. I owe it to these people. They gave me the opportunity to be their head football coach. I'm going to give it all I've got.

"When a man comes into a tough situation with young men, you develop a bond. There is that with us. The community and the administration has really rallied around us and been very supportive of us. It's hard to leave a situation when people are supportive of what you're trying to do."

Adams' reported withdrawal comes just two days after Josh Just of Hanover High School is Mechanicsville, Va., also withdrew from consideration. Just said that while the Hilton Head High job was a "great situation," it was too far for him and his family to relocate to.

The Seahawks won't be officially allowed to extend an offer until today, as Hilton Head High was awaiting word from the Beaufort County School District on whether the numbers would allow the school to create a slot for its next football coach. County teachers were required to inform the district this week on whether they intended to return for the next school year.
