Tom Sellers took the oath of office for commander and Spence Smith for vice commander at a ceremony Jan. 18, according to a news release. Sellers served as vice commander last year.
Sellers and Smith will be leading a flotilla that supports the U.S. Coast Guard with safety patrols, search-and-rescue missions, security at the Port of Savannah and by helping Coast Guard helicopter crews train for emergency water rescues and evacuations.
Auxiliary members receive Coast Guard-approved training, encompassing search-and-rescue, first aid, navigation and towing procedures, the release said.
Hal Curtis of Spring Island also was honored as Auxiliarist of the Year for logging more than 100 hours on the water.
Eric Glasscott of Sun City was honored for 20 years of service, and the Commander's Award was presented to Marilyn Oesterling of Moss Creek for 10 years of service.
The auxiliary teaches safe boating and GPS classes to anyone interested in improving their boating skills. It also offers free and confidential vessel exams.
