The Beaufort High School senior was recognized along with the Eagles' other senior wrestlers before their final home wrestling dual. Wynn then outlasted Fort Dorchester's Austin Ziliak to win at 152 pounds in the third overtime period.
Wynn said the victory was the 100th of his career. He celebrated with fitting emotion.
"I stepped on that mat saying I was going all in," Wynn said. "And I have to do that every match."
The individual performance was one of several the Eagles could point to as a positive Monday after the predictable happened. Class 4-A power Fort Dorchester overmatched Beaufort High as a team, winning the Region 8-AAAA matchup 38-20. The Patriots improved to 3-0 and can claim the region crown by defeating Summerville on Thursday.
Beaufort High slipped to 1-2 in region competition and needs to win Wednesday at Ashley Ridge to secure the region's third and final Class 4-A duals playoffs bid.
The Eagles faced a similar scenario last season, needing to defeat Ashley Ridge to earn a playoff bid, which they did.
The Eagles hope to be successful again this week. Beaufort High coach Bill DaMude found little to critique of his team's effort Monday.
"Fort D knows we came to wrestle," he told his wrestlers.
Among the highlights for the Eagles were Wynn's 2-1 decision, which he secured by earning an escape point with fewer than 10 seconds remaining. At 160 pounds, Trey Arant took a decision from defending 152-pound state champion DaQuan Wilson. Jake Sharp won a decision for Beaufort High at 106, avenging a loss to Tyree Wright at Navy Duals. And Codrian Smalls secured three points for his victory at 220.
Normally wrestling at the 220 spot, Eagles senior standout Maliek Maldonado was bumped up to try and avoid a pin by Fort Dorchester heavyweight Miles Moultrie. Moultrie had pinned Beaufort High's other options in previous duals, and DaMude wanted Maldonado only to avoid dropping six points.
Maldonado lost a decision on senior night.
Fort Dorchester coach B.D. LaPrad said he knew the Eagles were strong in the heavier weights.
"Those three are murderer's row," he said. "We knew what we were up against. You just try to survive up there."
His group did not surrender a pin to the Eagles' bigs. And the Patriots executed cradle moves to help them to four pins in the lighter weights.
"Our light weights really have to step up," Wynn said. "I think we just have to keep pushing those lights weights. And we're going to come all together."
