Celebrations honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. planned throughout Beaufort County

Celebrations in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day are planned today through Monday in Beaufort County.


  • Today: Youth night, 7 p.m., Technical College of the Lowcountry, 921 Ribaut Road.

  • Friday: Gospel extravaganza, 7 p.m., New Hope Baptist Church, 67 Parris Island Gateway, Burton.

  • Saturday: Banquet and ceremony for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award; 6 p.m., Beaufort High School, the Rev. Sam Spain of Lady's Island Baptist Church to speak.

  • Monday: Parade through downtown and keynote address by Fred Washington Jr., Beaufort County Board of Education chairman. The parade begins at 10 a.m. on Boundary and Rodgers streets. The speech starts at 11:30 a.m. at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, 801 Carteret St.


  • Monday: Memorial service, parade and cookout, Town Hall. The memorial starts at 1 p.m. and the parade at 2 p.m. The cookout is after the parade.


  • Today: Worship service, 7:30 p.m., Queen Chapel AME Church, 114 Beach City Road. Hilton Head Island High School's Out of the Blue choral group will perform with Larry Mercer. Canned goods for local food banks will be collected.

  • Saturday: Martin Luther King work day, 9 a.m. to noon. Free breakfast for volunteers from 8 to 9 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, 3001 Meeting St. Participants should wear work clothes and closed-toe shoes and bring work gloves. Canned goods for local food banks will be collected.

  • Saturday: "Keeping the Gullah Culture Alive Through Entrepreneurship: Honoring Abe Grant, Henry Driessen and Diogenese Singleton," 6 to 9 p.m., Spanish Wells Golf Club, 1 Brams Point Road. Tickets are $75 per person and include an oyster roast, Lowcountry boil and cash bar. Proceeds will be donated to the Gullah Museum.   • Monday: Memorial march and community cookout, Hilton Head Island High School. The march will be from 10 to 11 a.m. in the school parking lot; the cookout will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.

  • Monday: Showing of the film "Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin," 7 p.m., All Saints Episcopal Church.
