A 22-year-old Beaufort woman was arrested Monday night and accused of throwing her child off a balcony at an apartment complex, according to the Beaufort Police Department.
Shayla Jerea Bryan was charged with attempted murder after officers were called at about 10:25 p.m. to the Cross Creek Apartment Complex on Ambrose Run to reports of a child falling off a balcony, Beaufort Police Chief Matt Clancy said.
Clancy said officers found a toddler with severe injuries consistent with a fall.
Beaufort Police and officers from the S.C. Law Enforcement Division determined that Bryan, the child's mother, intended to injure the child, and Bryan was arrested, Clancy said.
The child was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital before being taken to Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Clancy said. The child's condition was not immediately available.
Clancy said the department's investigation is ongoing, and more details could be released later today.
