Authorities are trying to identify the body of a pedestrian killed Friday night on U.S. 17.

Emergency responders were called to the area near Bull Corner Road just before 9 p.m. A black male believed to be in his early 20s was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release Monday from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Coroner Ed Allen believes the man was struck by more than one vehicle, possibly as many as five. After the first car struck him, the driver pulled over to call 911, then at least two more vehicles struck the victim, Allen said. The body has been sent to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for an autopsy. Investigators are attempting to identify the man using fingerprint records.

The victim was wearing black clothing and black shoes and had no identifying scars, marks or tattoos. He had no identification and has yet to be linked to a missing-person report.

The accident is under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Anyone with information should call the Coroner's Office at 843-255-5151 or the Highway Patrol at 803-896-8144.
