Firefighters cooking up Boston butts for a cause

Published: November 30, 2011

The Bluffton firefighters are cooking Boston butts for a good cause again, this time to help two local elementary schoolers.

The Bluffton Firefighters Cooking Team serves up the cuts of pork at the seventh annual Boston Butt Fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 9 at Katie O'Donald's in Kitties Crossing next to Food Lion.

The event has expanded in recent years with a silent auction, cornhole tournament and live music. Boston butts can be ordered beforehand and barbecue platters will be sold day of for $7.

The firefighters are expecting to sell between 300 to 400 butts, all prepared starting a day or so before the event, said Bluffton Capt. Mike Rehill.

The fundraiser benefits two Bluffton girls.

Kimberly: A 10-year-old student at Michael C. Riley Elementary School student with cerebral palsy. She's infection-prone, which frequently leaves her bedridden and requires trips to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Her mother is her only caretaker, and the hospital bills are mounting.

Chloe: A 5-year-old student at M.C. Riley Elementary School. She was diagnosed last year with tuberous sclerosis, a genetic disease that can cause tumors. The growths in Chloe's brain mean she has seizures, lesions in her eyes and white spots on her skin. Chloe also has polycystic kidney disease, causing high blood pressure. She eventually will need a kidney transplant.

A full bone-in Boston butt is $30. Pre-orders are due Friday .
