For supporting Sean

On Sept. 10, many people and businesses from Beaufort and Ridgeland came together to support my son, Sean Cannon.

Sean, now 26, has been diagnosed with multiple medical diseases. He is being treated at the Mayo Clinic and Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., and on Sept. 13 underwent the second of three surgeries. He also is on the liver transplant list.

Sean has been unable to work since January and his medical and living expenses keep increasing. Several of our family and friends came up with the idea to have "A Party in the Park" fundraiser to help him and his wife, Lauren.

I would like to thank everyone who worked so hard on this event. There are too many people to name, and I'm afraid that if I start, someone will be forgotten.

Many thanks to those who donated or helped with the site prep, stage, lighting, face painting, hair tinsel, auction and raffle donations. I would like to give a special thank you to the bands that played: Four of a Kind, featuring Dann Slattery, Arley Hussin, Gary Higgins and Brian Woods; Sofa Kings; and Mark Bonds and The Market 246 Band. Also, Heidi Harvey, Samee Cannon, Lauren Cannon, Louie Szalay, Katy Thames and Kayla Pope sang for the crowd.

We met many new friends and our circle of support has broadened. As a mother, I needed to express my gratitude to family, Lynn's Point Country Club members, and our friends -- old and new.

Beaufort is a great place to live.

To SC residents

As a citizen of the United Kingdom, I have recently returned from a driving holiday around South Carolina, which my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed. The scenery, places and people were all excellent and I would certainly recommend the coastal areas.

One blip: In Charleston, my wallet was stolen in a fast-food restaurant -- credit cards, driving license, cash. We were bereft. We managed to have money sent from family at home to enable us to continue our journey, which we did, and we left the experience behind us.

To my surprise on returning home, a document mailer arrived two days later with all these possessions inside except the cash. The postmark was Beaufort, dated Oct. 20, with shipping costs of $5.20. I would like to thank the citizen who found the wallet and had the Southern courtesy to take the trouble in mailing it. Our faith in your state has been redeemed.
