Former heavyweight boxing champion Joe Frazier will be laid to rest in Beaufort, according to ESPN.

In a blog post, ESPN boxing writer Michael Woods quotes Frazier's daughter Jacqui as saying her father will be buried in Beaufort after a viewing and funeral in Philadelphia next week.

Frazier, who grew up on his family's 10 acre farm in Laurel Bay before becoming an Olympic and professional champion, died Monday at age 67 after a brief fight with liver cancer.

Frazier left Beaufort at age 16 for Philadelphia where he trained as a boxer and earned his nickname, "Smokin' Joe."

After the services in Philadelphia on Monday, Frazier's body will be moved to Beaufort for a private funeral service for family and close friends, as well as a public viewing of the former boxing great, ESPN reported.

Locally, organizers are finalizing the details and guest list for a public memorial service scheduled for noon Wednesday at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park

The local tribute will feature musical performances and remarks about Frazier's philanthropy and contributions to local young people, organizers said.

John Trask, one of the organizers of the local event, said Saturday former boxing legends who fought against or knew Frazier might also be in attendance Wednesday.

George Foreman, Sugar Ray Leonard and Jake LaMotta are among the boxers contacted by local organizers, Trask said.
