For the coverage

A big thank you to Amy Bredeson and The Island Packet for the story on our family and the effects of mental illness.

There are two very important items that need to be mentioned. One is how treatable mental illness is and to never give up hope. This shows in where John is today. His life has been returned through treatment, NAMI support and the support of his church and friends. We are extremely proud of this courageous young man.

For fund generosity

On behalf of the staff, the board of directors and the families we serve, Family Promise of Beaufort County would like to extend its deepest gratitude to the Long Cove Club Community Endowment Fund for its generosity.

In 2010, Long Cove granted Family Promise computer work stations to aide in our homeless families' quest for sustainable independence. This year, Long Cove awarded us funding to be used for child care during our families' employment-seeking stage.

As the only program of its kind in Beaufort County, Family Promise works with homeless families with children to help them resolve the issues that led to their homelessness. We then work to help individuals secure stable employment and housing, utilizing a network of faith and secular communities to house, feed and transport the families while they are in our program.

The mission of the Long Cove Club Community Endowment Fund is to encourage and support charitable giving by members of the Long Cove Club community. In awarding grants, the fund seeks to address current needs in the areas of health, housing, hunger and education on Hilton Head Island and in the surrounding areas.

We greatly appreciate the Long Cove Club for all its contributions to the community in those areas.

For kindness

Annette Young, a Hilton Head Island Walmart employee, went above and beyond her job description. I called to see if the store could find a special pair of shoes for my 94-year-old mother. I had tried the manufacturer and Walmart online to no avail. Annette checked her store, their computer and surrounding stores until she found the shoes I needed. She then somehow arranged for the shoes to be delivered to the Hilton Head store.

This act of kindness was more than heartwarming, and I wish to publicly thank her.

For 'field trip'

On Oct. 8, members of the Hilton Head Island Elementary School for the Creative Arts' Strength Team had the opportunity to train and learn with local physical therapists and personal trainers, who provided a two-hour "in-school field trip" for the 75 team members.

Students were able to learn the correct form for exercises, as well as ask questions about health and fitness. The Strength Team would like to thank Dennis Ittenbach, Chris Hobbs, Lori Anderson, Shawn Stone, Kevin Breedlove and Elise Audet for all that they did to make our team a success.

On Oct. 11, members of the Strength Team filmed a commercial to be shown throughout the state, and again, worked with community partners Ittenbach, Breedlove, Stone, Jessa Jeremiah from Powerhouse Gym, and Chef Glenn Keller from Frankie Bones, representing the SERG Group. In addition, the team is blessed to work with Keisha Lofton, who assists with daily team activities.

Our school and team would not be the success they are today without our community partners and friends. Thank you for all that you do for us.
