Prep Roundup, Oct. 14: Bluffton girls win region golf title

The Bluffton High School girls golf team shot a school-record 295 and ran away with the Region 7-AAA title Thursday at Island West Golf Club, beating rival Hilton Head High by 26 shots.

Bobcat teammates Sammie Buchanan and Brandi Hammonds tied for medalist honors at 2-under-par 70 in the 18-hole event, followed by Hilton Head High's Lily Bartell with a 74 and Jackie Budidharma with a 75.

Kylie Nizolek (76), Kasidy Beckel (79) and Hayley Trimmer (97) rounded out Bluffton's lineup. Nathalie Lezcano (78), Meredith Langs (94) and Meredith Wipper (110) rounded out the Seahawks' roster.

Waverley Wathall (85) paced Berkeley, which posted a team score of 393.

The Lower State tournament is Monday in Sumter, and after Thursday's performance Bluffton coach David Crosby likes his team's chances.

"I am very proud of the hard work and dedication the team has shown," Crosby said. "Golf is a changing movement day to day, but the girls have worked hard to put our team in this position, and I'm very proud of the accomplishment and look forward to the next two weeks."

VARSITY VOLLEYBALL

Hilton Head Prep 3, Hilton Head High 1: The Dolphins made the trip across the island and took down the Seahawks in four games, rallying after losing the first game to win 20-25, 25-19, 25-12, 25-15.

Dolphins setter Brooke Churchich had another solid match with 29 assists, most of which went to Liz Buterbaugh, who finished with 25 kills, five blocks, two aces and two digs. Halie Parker added nine kills, and Abby Miles had four kills and three aces for the Dolphins.

Prep (21-12) hosts St. Andrew's at 5 p.m. Monday for senior night.

Northwood Academy 3, Hilton Head Christian 1: The Eagles wrapped up their regular season with a four-game loss to the visiting Chargers, falling 25-20, 25-17, 21-25, 25-18.

Andy Anderson led the Eagles with 10 kills, Lauren Davis added five kills and Kelli Humes had six blocks. Stevie DeSimone had a team-high 17 assists, and Hannah Reynolds added 11 assists for Hilton Head Christian (2-18).

Bluffton/Battery Creek/Whale Branch: The Bobcats swept a tri-match with county foes Whale Branch and Battery Creek, while the Warriors beat the Dolphins to split their matches.

Bluffton beat Whale Branch 25-11, 25-7 and swept Battery Creek 25-10, 25-7. Mackenzie Cooler led the Bobcats (31-11) with 20 kills and had seven digs, and Abby Roulston added 12 kills and was 20-for-20 serving. Grace Collins had a team-high 18 assists and was 13-for-13 serving, and Franklin had 12 assists, six kills and was 17-for-17 serving. Dani Bothe added six kills and a team-high eight digs.

Whale Branch beat Battery Creek 25-21, 25-23 in the closest match of the night.

Sarah Wright led Battery Creek with three aces and four kills, Bre Jackson had four kills, Macala Barnard had four aces and Tina Kwok had a team-high seven digs.

First Baptist 3, Thomas Heyward 0: The Rebels dropped to 14-6 and 6-5 in SCISAA Region 2-AA with a 25-13, 25-20, 25-17 loss.

Ashlie Layman led Thomas Heyward with six kills, six blocks, two aces, two digs and two assists. Andrea Daring had a team-high eight assists and added three digs and two aces. Chandler Cook had six kills and six digs, and Taylor Ernestine had four assists.

The Rebels play at Cathedral Academy on Monday in a match that could determine their playoff fate.

VARSITY GIRLS TENNIS

Beaufort High 6, Summerville 0: The Eagles improved to 13-3 overall and 5-0 in Region 8-AAAA play with an impressive sweep of the Green Wave. Chelsea Bellomy fought off four match points in a third set tiebreak to remain undefeated at No. 1 singles, and Charlotte Bellomy, Kelsey Butler and Addie Everidge also remained undefeated in region play.

Hilton Head High 7, Battery Creek 0: The Seahawks remained perfect in Region 7-AAA, winning every singles match by a 6-0, 6-0 score. Hilton Head High (7-3 overall, 6-0 region) plays at Bluffton on Tuesday.

Hilton Head Christian 7, Beaufort Academy 2: Hilton Head Christian improved to 3-8 by sweeping the singles matches, and Beaufort Academy picked up both its victories in doubles. Hilton Head Christian travels to Whale Branch for a match at 4 p.m. Monday.
