HELPING HANDS

DoSomething.org and Staples are teaming up with ABC Family for the Staples for Students Do Something for kids in need national school supply drive. Beaufort-area teens are encouraged to collect school supplies and drop them off at the nearest Staples store through Sept. 17. Staples customers will be able to get involved by donating $1 or more at any Staples store. All school supplies and donations will be given locally to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry. The SADD Club will be conducting an environmental scan from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday. The students will be doing a survey on the number of alcohol and tobacco ads and product placement in local convenience stores, grocery stores and drug stores. Details: Mrs. Grooms, 843-322-5580

The SADD Club is collecting shoeboxes of all sizes for Operation Christmas Child. Shoeboxes can be dropped off in the front office with Mrs. Grooms.

The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support group for residents of Beaufort County will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Beaufort Elementary. Childcare is provided.

Beaufort Elementary school held two assemblies to observe the 10th anniversary of 9/11 on Sept. 9. Representatives from city government and the Beaufort Fire and Police departments were invited. Parents and students who have family members serving in the military were recognized during the assemblies.

The school commemorated the 10th anniversary of 9/11 in a ceremony in the memorial garden Friday. Invited guests included Senator Tom Davis, school board chairman Fred Washington Jr., Police Chief Matt Clancy and Representative Shannon Erickson. The school's string quintet performed, as did eighth-grade drama students.

ACHIEVEMENTS

The school's garden has been designated a Certified Wildlife Habitation by the South Carolina Wildlife Federation. The garden received the certification because it provides the four basic habitat elements needed for wildlife to survive: food, water, cover and places to raise young. Special thanks go to Frank Seguin for his work on the garden and Michael Brock for seeking the certification.

EVENTS

There is a fundraiser planned to help a student's family offset some recent hospital costs. A spaghetti dinner will be held at 6 p.m. today at Cat Island Pub. The cost is $10 per adult. Money raised will be given to the family.
