Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse was awarded $40,000 by the S.C. Bar Foundation to aid victims of domestic abuse in Beaufort, Jasper, Colleton and Hampton counties.
The grant was part of $1.4 million in awards to support civil legal aid, law-related education and other projects, the Bar Foundation said in a news release.
Many statewide organizations with a presence in the Lowcountry also received funding:
S.C. Legal Services is the statewide provider of civil legal services to low-income South Carolinians ($1 million).
The S.C. Bar Law Related Education Division conducts programs for the state's youth ($160,000).
The S.C. Access to Justice Commission aims to expand access to civil legal representation ($80,000).
The S.C. Center for Fathers & Families places low-income fathers unable to pay child support in jobs and teaches them to be responsible fathers ($44,020).
The S.C. Bar Ask-A-Lawyer Program provides legal educational clinics to give the public access to legal information ($40,000).
The S.C. Bar Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the South Carolina Bar.
