St. Peter celebrates 20 years, new building

It's been 20 years since St. Peter Catholic School began welcoming students. The school began in the education wing of St. Peter Catholic Church with pre-kindergarten through first grade students. Now, it's in its own building on Lady's Island and has expanded to teach about 160 students from age 3 to eighth grade.

Anniversary celebrations kicked off on the first day of school, Aug. 15. The students had a special Mass to mark the occasion, executive assistant Dee Avard said. They also had their first "Running of the Halls." Principal Sister Judy Therese and Father Paul MacNeil led the students on a jog throughout the school building.

There have been many moments that mark the school's growth over the past 20 years. The school moved to its own building in 1995. The first school play, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat" was put on in the spring of 2000. An outdoor classroom, soccer field and gardens have been added the past few years. The school also has recently completed a computer lab and added interactive whiteboards.

Avard said celebrations will continue throughout the year. Students and staff will wear special T-shirts on the 20th of each month. The shirts say "I am 20 years old ..." on the front and include the school's tagline, "Building a Foundation for Life," on the back.
