Events mark National Breast-feeding Awareness month

August is National Breast-feeding Awareness month and this week marks World Breast-feeding Week. Three local groups are hosting special events to celebrate and help new moms interested in breast-feeding.

  • Beaufort-Jasper-Hampton Comprehensive Health Service's WIC program is offering special baby showers to program participants. The showers will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the Chelsea WIC office, Aug. 12 at the Port Royal WIC office and Aug. 19 at the Naval Hospital Beaufort WIC office. There will be a grand prize, door prizes and free gifts at each event. Details: 843-987-7436

  • Hilton Head Hospital features a breast-feeding support group that meets Thursdays. The hospital's "Express Yourself" store sells a variety of supplies needed for nursing. A nurse/certified lactation consultant is available to answer questions about products. Details: 843-689-8245

  • Beaufort Memorial Hospital offers monthly Breast-feeding 101 classes in Beaufort and in Bluffton. The next class is from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 17 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Another class is from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 24 at Bluffton Medical Services. Cost is $20. Registration is required. Details: 843-524-5570
