HELPING HANDS Verizon Wireless stores will be accepting new school supplies to give students back-to-school essentials through Aug. 15. The items collected will help local organizations serving underprivileged and low-income youth throughout the Lowcountry. Customers and employees are encouraged to donate No. 2 pencils, magic markers, colored pencils, plastic rulers, spiral notebooks, crayons, glue sticks, white glue, dry erase markers, pocket folders, construction paper, pencil bags, erasers, index cards and children's scissors.
OTHER The University of South Carolina's University Test Prep program and University of South Carolina Beaufort are teaming up to offer a SAT/ACT test prep program at the Hilton Head Gateway Campus in Bluffton. The course will be offered from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. today-Thursday. The program is intended to help rising ninth- through 12th-graders. Lunch, course materials (including the Official SAT and ACT textbooks), workbooks and interactive online comprehensive review sessions in September will be provided. Registration is required. OTHER Applications for a permit to park on school property for the 2011-2012 school year will be taken for 12th grade only from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and for 11th and 12th grades from 12:30-2 p.m. Thursday. The student or parent must appear personally at the school to apply and must have completed the district-mandated re-enrollment forms required this year. Students who miss this opportunity must wait until the first week of school during lunch to apply for any available spaces at that time. Students must be enrolled at Bluffton High and be in 11th or 12th grade; have completed the re-enrollment packet; have paid any financial obligations to the school; present a valid driver's license, car registration and proof of insurance; complete the school's parking application; secure a parent's signature or bring a signed parental permission note; and pay the $15 application fee.
