  • and Staples are teaming up with the stars from ABC Family for the Staples for Students Do Something for kids in need national school supply drive. Beaufort-area teens are encouraged to collect school supplies and drop them off at the nearest Staples store through Sept. 17. Staples customers will be able to get involved by donating $1 or more at any Staples store. All school supplies and donations will be given locally to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry.   • The University of South Carolina's University Test Prep program and University of South Carolina Beaufort are teaming up to offer a SAT/ACT test prep program at USCB's Hilton Head Gateway Campus in Bluffton. The course will be offered from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 1-4. The program is intended to help rising ninth- through 12th-graders. Lunch, course materials (including the official SAT and ACT textbooks), workbooks and interactive online comprehensive review sessions in September will be provided. Registration is required.   • Teachers from Ridgeland Middle School and Bluffton High School were among 15 teachers from Coastal Georgia and South Carolina who participated in the second annual Coastal Savannah Writing Project Summer Institute in Writing hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State University. Participating teachers worked on their own writing skills, learned about the latest research on teaching writing, and planned and presented strategy workshops to their peers. Details: www.cswp.


  • The SADD Club is collecting boxes of tissues for the upcoming start of school. Donations may be left in the front office with Mrs. Grooms through Aug. 6. SADD cookbooks are also available for $10 in the office.

  • Sports physicals will be from 9-11 a.m. Saturday in the Health Room of Robert Smalls Middle School. Cost is $10, cash only. Forms are available in the front office.

  • New Student Orientation will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 11 in the McVey Performing Arts Center. Parents/guardians and freshmen should plan to visit teachers in their classrooms following the presentation.

  • Freshman pictures will be taken from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 10 in the cafeteria. Sophomore pictures will be taken from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 10. Junior pictures will be taken from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 9. Once the photo has been taken, each student should take his/her photo ticket to guidance to receive his/her schedule and locker assignment. Students should then report upstairs (D-Hall) to the book room for his/her books. Seniors will receive their schedules and locker assignments from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 8 in the cafeteria.


  • The Beaufort County School District will host the Back To School Expo 2011 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at Whale Branch Early College High School, 169 Seabrook Road, Seabrook. The free event will feature health and wellness activities, informational roundtables, games, prizes and food. Durham School Services will provide free transportation; call 843-322-5451.   • Area students in kindergarten through seventh grade are invited to participate in the Beaufort County School District's free virtual summer school program. Students can work on individual areas of need or prepare for the coming school year by using a Web-based tool during the eight-week program this summer. Students will complete CompassLearning sequences in math and language arts for each week of summer school. The program will be available through Aug. 5. Registration is available at

  • The Beaufort High School Class of 1991 will hold its 20th reunion Friday and Saturday in Beaufort. It includes a meet and greet, family cookout and "White Affair Social." The cost is $75 for singles and $115 for couples and families. Money orders or cashier's checks should be made payable to Beaufort High School Class of 1991 Reunion and sent to: P.O.
