Moving to fight hunger: Zumbathon raises food bank donations

Local Zumba enthusiasts recently helped do more than dance off some calories -- they helped feed the hungry. Almost 30 participants, ages 5 to 75, danced for three hours at Z4 Fitness Studio's "Join the Party to Fight Hunger" Zumbathon event July 16 on Hilton Head Island. Zumba, a dance fitness program created in Colombia during the 1990s, combines Latin and international music with dance to make exercise fun.

The event raised about $75 and collected canned goods to donate to the Sandalwood Community Food Bank's Pantry, run by the Rev. Dr. Nannette Pierson. The nonprofit pantry helps families living on Hilton Head who need assistance.

"Their shelves are almost bare as there are so many people who need help right now," said Doug Moore, director of Z4's business development and marketing.

Moore and his wife, Ivette Lopez-Moore, an instructor and co-owner of the studio, have six children and can appreciate how hard it can be to feed a family.

"We are both from working-class families and we know this is our duty, our responsibility to help our community," he said. "We want to make sure those people who are working two or three jobs have food to eat, and to ensure there is an opportunity for people out there to be fit and healthy. A fit and healthy person is a productive person."

The Moores are planning two more events: one for breast cancer survivors in August and another food drive for Bluffton Self Help in September.
