Sweetgrass exhibit on display at Penn Center

The York W. Bailey Museum at historic Penn Center will present the debut exhibition of "The Beaufort Basket" by sweetgrass basket maker Jery Bennett-Taylor on Saturday. This will be the first in a series of exhibits celebrating Gullah traditional art in South Carolina. The gallery will also preview the film, "Grass Roots: African Origins of an American Art," a companion to the national traveling exhibit, at noon. The exhibit opens at 1 p.m. followed by a lecture and demonstration by Taylor from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibit closes Aug. 26. Museum admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children younger than 17. The center is at 16 Penn Center Circle West on St. Helena Island.
