Military Honors for July 7

  • Air Force Airman 1st Class Thomas Castaneda graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies; Air Force core values; physical fitness; and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

  • He is the son of Sally McCroskey of Beaufort.

  • Army Spec. Deirdre Taylor-Scales has returned to Fort Richardson, Alaska, after a yearlong deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The soldier is one of 100 members of the 23rd Engineer Company, 6th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade. The unit, known as "the Guardians," served in Kandahar Province in southern Afghanistan, and specialized in clearing roads of mines and improvised explosive devices. Taylor-Scales is an automated logistical specialist and has served in the military for six years.

  • She is the stepdaughter of Claud Johnson of Beaufort.

  • Air Force Airman Joshua Tolbert graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies; Air Force core values; physical fitness; and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

  • He is the son of Charles Tolbert of Beaufort and a 2010 Battery Creek High School graduate.
