Society of Bluffton Artists makes a move

The move was small, but the Society of Bluffton Artists is confident it will lead to big things.

The nonprofit artists' group recently relocated to 8 Church St. in old town Bluffton, just around the corner from its old gallery on Boundary Street. SoBA president Chris Clayton said the proximity to Calhoun Street, which typically has higher foot traffic than Boundary, should help get more people inside the gallery to see the dozens of original artworks on display. Clayton said the group also wants to expand its educational offerings for children and adults.

The group kicked things off May 29 at its new, larger gallery with a reception for its judged members-only show. Beaufort artist Mary Segars judged the more than 80 entries. Her work appeared in this year's Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibit in Charleston. The SoBa judged show will be on display through July 4. The winners were:

Best in show: Kathy Tortorella, "Marsh Magic"

First place: Lynda Potter, "Interplay"

Second place: Julia Yeager, "As Easy As ABC -- Amy Becky Cindy"

Third place: Marcie Tressel, "White Calla Lily"

Honorable mentions: Chris Mitts, "Moonlight Bamboo"; Ed Funk, "Amaryllis Under Glass"; Bonnie Mason, "Shrimp Pond Dike"; Chris Clayton, "Southern Beauty"; and Jo Dye, "Divisions"
