No cure for a love of fashion and decorating magazines

  • 1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened

    1 cup cooked crabmeat, pick over for shells

    2 tablespoons grated onion

    1 tablespoon cream-style horseradish

    1/2 cup toasted sliced almonds

    Salt and pepper to taste

    Combine all ingredients, except almonds, in a bowl. Spoon mixture into an 8-inch pie plate, sprinkle with almonds. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Serve with Triscuits.

I have always loved decorating and fashion. I love reading books and magazines about both subjects and could do so all day long.

When my kids Tat and Will were little, a friend and I made several caftans and we wore them constantly. I loved mine because I could dress "up" or "down" in two seconds with a little jewelry or none at all. By the time Jamie arrived on the scene, I didn't have much time for languishing around with three little niblets running here and there.

I was still intrigued by my magazines on both subjects, though. Even when Tat was small, she would say it was perfectly all right to wear prints with plaid. When some astonished person would ask her how she knew this for sure, she would answer without hesitation, "I saw it in Vogue."

I still have the fashion and decorating bug and I do believe there is no known cure. Here in Bluffton we have those grand fashionistas, Geist, Patsy and "Madame Egg." Kate and Anna Pepper, and of course our dear Druella, if anyone needs help fluffing up. Me? I wing it, and most of the time do a pretty good job.

I was at the outlets Sunday and there were several women shopping for clothes, accompanied by their annoyed husbands. While most of the men had glazed expressions on their faces, some seemed really into the whole event. Of course, the wives were being advised to buy some really ghastly outfits, and yours truly was horrified. I think most husbands should be parked in a bar or under a tree while you are shopping. It would really be best to leave the old boy at home if possible.

  • We were at a beautiful brunch several weeks ago. The food was so delicious and perfect for a coolish late spring. Most of the entrees were grilled, salmon and asparagus spears lightly brushed with olive oil, served with baby sauteed eggplant and heirloom tomatoes. The unusual treat was smoked oysters served in bloody Marys, made even tastier with the addition of horseradish. Pickled okra or asparagus was used as a garnish. There was a melon sorbet for dessert made from cantaloupe. Can you say fabuloso twice? It was a very simple party, but very memorable.

  • The Telfair Museum in Savannah will celebrate its annual observance of Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, which commemorates the 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas, the last state to do so. The event will be held June 7-9 at several different venues and will include a performance by noted storyteller, Mitch Capel.
