Music, dancing and food are among the highlights of the upcoming celebration of the 63rd year of Israel's Independence Day, Yom Ha'atzmaut.

The community is invited to join two Lowcountry Jewish congregations -- Congregation Beth Yam of Hilton Head Island and Temple Oseh Shalom in Bluffton -- at the birthday bash.

Last year more than 200 people attended the festive affair where they danced and sang "Hatikvah," Israel's National Anthem.

"Every year is a miracle of rebirth of the Jewish state," said Dr. William Bilek, coordinator of Israel events for Congregation Beth Yam. "We will sing, have music and learn a little about Israel from the music, dancing and eating."

Live music will be performed by the Mike Regal Quintet of Sun City Hilton Head. Area politicians including Hilton Head Island Mayor Drew Laughlin and state Sen. Tom Davis are expected to attend.

Homemade Israeli and Jewish foods will be served, including falafel (a patty made of ground chickpeas), cakes, kugels (noodle casserole), mandel-bread (biscotti) pies, pitas, barekas (a cheese pastry) and homemade Israeli salads.

The celebration is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Congregation Beth Yam, 4501 Meeting St., Hilton Head Island.
