Religion News: Churches celebrate Holy Week

With Holy Week comes a host of special events and services offered across the Lowcountry to include a Labyrinth, Easter egg hunts, cantatas, crosses made of live flowers and an art exhibit.

HOLY WEEK LABYRINTH

For the 10th consecutive year, the Holy Week Labyrinth event is from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, 157 Lady's Island Drive, Beaufort. The Chartres design canvas is meant to be walked in stockings or socks. Details: 843-524-5993

ART EXHIBIT

Fourteen religious art pieces by Joseph Pizzat's titled, "The Stations In/Of the Cross and Palm Sunday Still-Life," are on exhibit from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays through April 25 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Bluffton. Pizzat's contemporary work offers samples of two Stations of the Cross that depict the conviction, crucifixion, death and resurrection of Jesus. ST. FRANCIS BY THE SEA CATHOLIC CHURCH

Holy Week and Easter Sunday Mass events at St. Francis By the Sea Catholic Church of Hilton Head Island begin at 5:30 p.m. today with Palm Sunday Vigil Mass in the family center with the Blessing of Palms. The Mass of the Lord's Supper will be celebrated at 6 p.m. in English and 7:30 p.m. in Spanish on Thursday. The adoration of the Blessed Sacrament continues until 10 p.m. in the family center. Good Friday's veneration of the cross and communion service begins at 3 p.m. in English and 6 p.m. in Spanish. Easter Vigil, April 23, begins at 8:15 p.m. Easter Sunday Masses will be celebrated at 6:30 a.m., 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and noon in the church and at 9 and 11 a.m. in the multipurpose building. FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF HILTON HEAD ISLAND

First Presbyterian Church's annual Easter egg hunt begins at 10:30 a.m. today. Three Palm Sunday services are planned Sunday. Traditional services will be at 8:30 and 11 a.m. with the Sanctuary Choir presenting the cantata. CrossRoads informal worship begins at 9:45 a.m.

A Maundy Thursday observance begins at 4:30 p.m. Thursday with a talk, "Crisis in the Middle East," by international correspondent Ken Timmerman, who will discuss the persecution of Christians and other issues in the Middle East. Timmerman is an investigative reporter and Nobel Peace Prize nominee who has been tracking terrorism and weapons of mass destruction programs for 25 years as a journalist, consultant and best-selling author. A fellowship dinner begins at 5:30 p.m.; cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children. Reservations are necessary by noon Thursday.

The Maundy Thursday worship service is at 6:30 p.m. A Good Friday service begins at 6:30 p.m. A sunrise service begins at 6:30 a.m. Easter Sunday at Jarvis Creek Park, with music by the CrossRoads Band and the Rev. Sam Martin preaching. Bring a lawn chair; the service will be held in the church in case of rain. Traditional Easter services begin at 8:30 and 11 a.m. in the sanctuary. Children's church begins at 11 a.m. The church is at 540 William Hilton Parkway, between mile markers 5 and 6.

CARTERET STREET UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

Carteret Street United Methodist Church Traditional Palm Sunday Worship and Procession of the Palms will be at 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday. The Easter Cantata, "The Living Last Words" by Ruth Elaine Schram, will be presented by the Chancel Choir at 6 p.m. Sunday, followed by a reception. Lenten Worship Services are at noon Monday-Wednesday, to be followed by lunch. Maundy Thursday, Service of Tenebrae with Stripping of the Altar is at 6 p.m. Thursday. A Reenactment of Journey to Golgatha with youth to carry the cross begins at 11:30 a.m. Friday. Good Friday Communion is from noon-3 p.m. Friday. The movie "Jesus of Nazareth" will be aired at 3:15 p.m. Friday in the multipurpose room of the Wesley Building. The traditional Easter Sunday Worship with Adorning of the Altar is at 9 and 11 a.m. April 24. Parishioners are asked to bring flowers to place upon the Living Cross in front of the church. An Easter Breakfast will be served in the Fellowship Hall at 10 a.m. There will be no Sunday School. The church is at 408 Carteret St., Beaufort.

ST. ANDREW BY-THE-SEA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

St. Andrew By-The-Sea United Methodist Church will offer Palm/Passion services at 9 and 11:15 a.m. Sunday followed by an Easter egg hunt at 12:30 p.m. for children (fifth grade and younger). Children are encouraged to be part of the Procession of the Palms at the beginning of either worship service.

Good Friday Service, "One Sacred Hour," is at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Directed by Tim Reynolds, about 70 singers from the church and the community will perform music from the African-American and European traditions. The service will include readings based on the events of Holy Week through the crucifixion.

Easter Sunday Sunrise Service begins at 6:30 a.m. April 24 at Coligny Beach. Services will be held at the church in the event of rain or imminent threat of rain. Sanctuary worship is at 9 and 11:15 a.m. with brass and choir at both services. Bring a flower to add to the living cross. The church is at 20 Pope Ave., Hilton Head Island.

THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF THE REDEEMER

The Anglican Church of the Redeemer of Hilton Head Island will hold Palm Sunday Services with Blessing and Distribution of the Palms at 10 a.m. Sunday. Maundy Thursday Service with Altar of Repose and Stripping of the Altar is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Good Friday Service is at noon Friday with Meditations of the Cross from 1-3 p.m. Easter Sunday Service is at 10 a.m. April 24. The church is at 1 Mathews Drive, Suite 101, Hilton Head. ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH

St. John's Lutheran Church will host Holy Week events this week. Palm Sunday Procession of Palms will be at 8:15 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Good Friday service is at 7 p.m. Friday. The Easter Vigil will be at 8 p.m. April 23. Easter Day Festival Communion and Music is at 8:15 and 10:30 a.m. April 24.

Children of all ages are invited to an Easter egg hunt at 2 p.m. April 23. Children should bring an Easter basket. Refreshments will be served. The church is at 157 Lady's Island Drive, Lady's Island.

PROVIDENCE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

The Mark Sellman Brass Quartet from Savannah will perform at the 9 and 11 a.m. Palm Sunday services Sunday. The quartet will play several pieces by itself, and accompany the Providence choir on Ralph Vaughn Williams' choral masterpiece "O Clap Your Hands." An Easter egg hunt will follow the service.

Easter Sunday will feature the Providence Chancel Choir presenting several pieces from the cantata "Come Touch the Robe" by Pepper Choplin and "Worthy is the Lamb" by Darlene Zscheck. Soloist Chalmers Gorman will perform. The church is at 171 Cordillo Parkway, Hilton Head Island.
