Burton couple charged in grocery store shooting

April 7, 2011

A 31-year-old Burton man and his girlfriend were charged Thursday in connection with a shooting the previous day outside a grocery store.

Deputies were called to Beaufort Memorial Hospital at about 3:15 p.m. to meet with a 46-year-old man who said he had been shot outside the Food Lion on Shanklin Road, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

The man told deputies he and Charles Green were discussing money when Green fired at him with a shotgun, striking him in the left arm and left leg.

Authorities say Green left in a vehicle driven by his girlfriend, Ashley Thomas.

The victim was taken to the hospital by a friend.

Green was arrested early Thursday at his home on Murray Drive, and Thomas turned herself in later that day, the Sheriff's Office said.

Green was charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Thomas will be charged as an accessory to a felony, the Sheriff's Office said.
