Gazette Sea Foam: Community support sought for boy's surgery

March 28, 2011

Thanks to Carl Joye of Beaufort for sharing a poem about a special young man he hopes local people can help.

Carl is manager of Weichert Realtors-Apex Realty in Beaufort, which has announced that its spring fundraising campaign will be dedicated to a local boy named Donavan who is in need of an unusual form of hip surgery.

Carl writes:

Donavan requires the surgery to bring him up to speed in the mobility department. It's not just the surgery, but the attendant expenses that are not adequately covered by this brave and charming young man's insurance company.

The real estate agency has committed $100 from each commission and is asking the community to respond with donations to, where all the pertinent information can be found.

For the medically astute, the surgeon "will perform a left femoral dislocating, reshaping and restorative femoral osteotomy" on Donavan. This is a massive surgery.

For the layman, Donavan wants to be able to play football, to be more like other kids his age, and to have this long (seven-year) physical trial behind him.

Donavan and his family will need to travel from Beaufort to Sinai Hospital in Baltimore and back. This entails out-of-pocket expenses of travel, temporary lodging for two weeks minimum (providing Donavan has no complications), meals, co-pays, prescriptions, wheelchair, walker, crutches, physical therapy and more.

The goal is a mere $12,000.

As a community, we should be able to do this.

Donavan's a great kid and could use a little help,

If you get a chance, visit his site and give a yelp.

Raisin' a little money so he can get what he needs;

Just wants to run and jump and play in the weeds.

Got great family and friends doing all they can,

Sure would be appreciated if you joined the clan.

We all are oh so lucky in so many ways,

If you are able, you sure could brighten his days!

So do what you can or just send a card,

Tell him you're proud of him working so hard.

Help this young 14-year-old boy in our town,

It feels so good to make smiles out of frowns!
