Battery Creek group hosts youth summit

Battery Creek High School's Future Business Leaders of America Chapter will hold a free Youth Empowerment Summit at the school from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 9. Registration begins at 8 a.m., when students will have a chance to win door prizes.

Students from middle and high schools are invited.

Step teams from local schools will perform and motivational speaker Alton Jamison from Suffolk, Va., will speak. Workshops on topics such as bullying and financial literacy will be offered.

BATTERY CREEK HIGH SCHOOL

  • The Athletics Booster Club will meet at 6 p.m. April 4 in the cafeteria.

  • The School Improvement Council will meet April 13 in the media center.

  • The SADD Club will participate in the Belk Charity Day Sale on April 16. Coupons can be purchased for $5 from any member.

  • Prom will be April 23. Reservation forms are in the front office. Details: Ms. Smith, 843-322-5543

  • Spirit Nights at Jersey Mike's Subs on Robert Smalls Parkway will be from 4-9 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of the month. Ten percent of all sales will support the school's Athletic Booster Club. The next Spirit Night is April 28.

  • A PTSO meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. April 28 in the John J. McVey Performing Arts Center. Students who made the honor roll for the second grading period will be recognized.

    BEAUFORT ACADEMY

  • The school will offer an SAT Prep course open to all students in the community designed to prepare students for the June 4 administration of the SAT. The six-week course, taught by Advanced Placement instructors, will meet from 9-11 a.m. Saturdays, from April 16 through May 28, in the Learning Center on the BA campus.   • Students return from Spring Break this week and second trimester report cards will be distributed early in the week.

  • Spring portraits for Lower School students in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade will be Tuesday. Pictures will be taken outside if weather permits.

    BEAUFORT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

  • Kindergarten orientation for parents will be from 8:30-10 a.m. April 5 at the school. Parents can learn about the kindergarten program, meet staff and tour classrooms. Registration will be April 4-8.

    BEAUFORT COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT

  • Registration for public pre-kindergarten and kindergarten programs for the 2011-12 school year will be this week. Child Find screenings for pre-kindergarten candidates will be April 4-April 8. Details: 843-521-2399 or call the nearest public elementary school

    BEAUFORT HIGH SCHOOL

  • The National French Honor Society is raising money to provide relief in Japan by collecting money schoolwide. This follows the group's success last year in raising $1,000 in response to the earthquake in Haiti and donating the money to Food for the Hungry.     LADY'S ISLAND MIDDLE AND INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS

  • Students return to school April 4.

  • Baseball and softball games will be April 5 and April 7.

  • A track meet will be April 6.

  • Spring MAP testing will be April 4-29.

    MOSSY OAKS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

  • New students entering for the 2011-2012 school year can register from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. beginning April 4. All students entering pre-kindergarten must attend a Child Find screening April 4-8. To schedule an appointment, call 843-322-2900.

    RIVERVIEW CHARTER SCHOOL

  • The third annual Beaufort Twilight Run, one of Riverview's largest fundraisers, attracted more than 1,400 runners and a crowd of more than 2,000 people to Habersham on March 19. Many Riverview students participated in a quarter-mile fun run as part of the event, which also included an oyster roast. With the help of 120 volunteers, the event raised $30,000 for the school.

    ST. PETER CATHOLIC SCHOOL

  • No school today for parent-teacher conferences.

  • Report cards will be distributed Tuesday.

  • An eighth-grade kayaking trip will be Wednesday.

  • Students in fifth and eighth grade will be take the ACRE Standardized Test on Thursday. The Assessment of Catechesis/Religious Education evaluates the effectiveness of the religion program at the school. Details: www.ncea.org or call 843-522-2163.

  • The art club meets at 3:15 p.m. Friday in the art room.

  • Picture Day is Friday.

    SHELL POINT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

  • Extended learning time will be this week.

  • The Beaufort High School Class of 1991 will hold its 20th reunion July 29 and July 30 in Beaufort. It includes a meet and greet, family cookout and "White Affair Social." The cost is $75 for singles and $115 for couples and families. That rate can be discounted to $100 if paid in full by April 1. Money orders or cashier's checks should be made payable to Beaufort High School Class of 1991 Reunion and sent to P.O. Box 1991, Beaufort, SC 29901. Volunteers are needed for reunion committees.
