Gazette Sea Foam: Soccer teams' 'pink out' to raise money, awareness

March 7, 2011

Thanks to David Woodward of Beaufort for sharing the story of a special soccer game this week.

David writes:

On Tuesday, the Beaufort High Eagles soccer team will kick off the first of a series of events to help one of its own.

The Eagles soccer teams will host Battery Creek High starting with the girls' game at 5:30 p.m. followed by the boys' at 7 p.m.

Things will look just a bit different as the teams take the field in pink. The familiar green will be put aside for pink jerseys to raise awareness of breast cancer.

Looking more closely, you will see the pink ribbon symbol with the link that makes this event so special.

The name stenciled on the jerseys is that of Beaufort High 1980 graduate Margo Middleton.

Margo is a school district employee who has served the school in many capacities. For years she has driven the team bus to away games, and has been a traveling companion to the team.

She has been part of the soccer family and one of those folks who makes the safe return of our teams a reality. We have trusted our teams and our children to her capable hands.

As our teams have battled, Margo has silently been in a battle of her own. Margo recently discovered she has breast cancer.

To raise awareness, several of the team supporters decided to make a statement and do their part to raise some funds to help in this battle.

Some of the area restaurant owners will donate part of the proceeds from the team dine-out night to Margo's cause.

After Tuesday night's game -- Varsity Girls Night for the team -- family, fans and friends will eat at Rancho Grande (formerly La Hacienda). We will dine together and support this special cause. Later in the season, all of the teams will meet at other restaurants, which will be announced later.

Teams urge all Eagles fans to show up for the game wearing your best pink and fill the stands with a "pink out."

Support the team and Margo with your presence in pink and dine out to help raise some money (tell them you are there for Margo). Donations also will be accepted at the game.

Show up! Wear pink! Eat out! Show Margo the love! Support the cause and Beaufort High Eagles soccer. Go Eagles! Go pink!
