The sixth annual St. Peter Oyster Roast and Microbrew Festival fundraiser for students at St. Peter Catholic School will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Live Oak Park in Port Royal.

More than 200 bushels of oysters are being prepared for 2,200 to 2,500 people, said Douglas Massalon, committee chairman of the festival.

"This is the largest and best oyster roast ever," Massalon said.

Massalon's three children attended the school when he created the idea of holding an oyster roast to help raise money for the students more than six years ago.

"I saw different areas of the school where help was needed," Massalon said.

Money raised the first year went to the athletic department to help build a basketball court. Money raised over the past five years has also helped provide mini grants for individual students, classrooms and teachers as well as money for lighting systems, microscopes and irrigation systems for drama, science and garden clubs. Most recently, computer equipment was purchased.

The all-you-can-eat oyster roast also includes more than 70 microbrews and other foods such as hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, fish sandwiches, chili and We Island Gumbo.

Live entertainment will be provided by the Steppin' Stones, an oldies-but-goodies variety group.

Other activities include games and silent and live auctions. Children ages 14 and younger are invited to a free supervised and secure area where face painting, inflatable rides, games and entertainment will be offered as well as a special menu.

Tickets are $25 and available at St. Peter Catholic School and Bill's Liquors and Fine Wines on Lady's Island and in Bluffton. This event is staged by volunteers, and all money raised goes to the school. Rain date is Sunday.
