'Uncommon Folk': Area artists to be featured in documentary

The upcoming South Carolina ETV documentary "Uncommon Folk" will spotlight six self-taught South Carolina artists and their unique creations in conjunction with the S.C. State Museum exhibit by the same title. The program will premiere at 8 p.m. Thursday on SCETV as part of the "Carolina Stories" series.

The featured artists are Maxie McConnell Eades, the Rev. Johnnie Simmons, L.C. Carson, Sam Doyle, Ernest Lee and Margaret Robbins. Two of the artists are from St. Helena Island -- Simmons from the Cedar Grove community and the late Doyle from the Wallace community.

Parts of the documentary were filmed at the Red Piano Too Art Gallery on St. Helena. The gallery is at 870 Sea Island Parkway.
