At 'Extreme Makeover' home site, calls goes out for skilled labor

January 15, 2011

Saturday, Jan. 15: Builders were again searching for skilled labor Saturday as ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" construction of Bill and India Dickinsons' new home continued.

At about 4:30. p.m., H2 Builders, which is coordinating construction of the house on Mystic Circle, sent out word that contractors were "desperate" for workers to finish and sand drywall installed inside the home.

Without those workers, the project could fall even farther behind schedule, said Todd Hawk, owner of H2 Builders.

Cold weather and a lack of experienced framers delayed the build Thursday night but builders still expect to finish the project on-time, Hawk said.

The drywall work was expected to continue Saturday night as crews prepared to install the exterior trim throughout the night. Contractors also completed the project's mechanical work Friday night, including the installation of the heating and air conditioning systems and plumbing.

The home's power was turned Saturday, and the roof is nearly complete, according to the builders.

TODAY

Pending completion of drywall work Saturday night, workers will begin installing the home's interior trim as well as tile and cabinetry, according to the builders.

WANT TO GO?

The building project is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Visitors should park at Piggly Wiggly on Ribaut Road. Regular shuttles will take them to the site. Spectators can donate a nonperishable food item, which will be collected by volunteers from local Boys & Girls Clubs, to benefit area food shelters.
