SLED investigating Yemassee police department

October 28, 2010

Yemassee and state officials are being tight-lipped about a criminal investigation into the town's police department.

Late last month, Mayor J.L. Goodwin and Town Council asked Hampton County Sheriff T.C. Smalls to investigate "financial irregularities" within the department, Goodwin said.

Goodwin refused to specify what irregularities prompted town officials to request the investigation, which the Sheriff's Office has since turned over to the S.C. Law Enforcement Division.

"It would be improper for me to comment on the investigation at this time," Goodwin said Thursday. "With someone else handling the investigation, I really think any information or comment should come from them."

SLED spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons declined to provide specifics about the case, pending the investigation.

Attempts Thursday to reach Yemassee Police Chief Jack Hagy and a Hampton County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman for comment were unsuccessful.
