Golf notebook: Amateurs out to defend Honors Cup

The top players in the Hilton Head Island Amateur Golf Association will face off against the best from the Hilton Head Island Professional Golf Association in the 2010 Honors Cup, set for Monday at the Golf Club at Indigo Run.

The professionals lead the Ryder Cup-style series 21-3 but the amateurs have won the past two years. The amateurs need 9 of 18 points to retain the Cup and the professionals need 9 1/2 points to win it. Spectators are welcome and there is no charge.

Before the tournament, both teams will meet for a putting contest and a steak dinner on Sunday. Matches start at 8:30 a.m. on Monday with a better ball followed by individual play.

Captains for the amateur team are Bob Collar and Steve Henry. Captains for the professional team are Dave Wilding and Nathan Broyles.

McGLADREY CLASSIC DRAWS MORE BIG NAMES

The McGladrey Classic will host several former major winners when the official PGA Tour event takes place Oct. 6-10 at Sea Island Golf Club on Saint Simons Island, Ga.

On Wednesday, Trevor Immelman, David Duval, David Toms, Justin Leonard and Lee Janzen committed to play the tournament. Former major winners Davis Love III, Zach Johnson and Lucas Glover had previously committed.

Immelman won the Masters, Duval and Leonard won the British Open and Toms won the PGA Championship. Love, Duval and Leonard also won the Players Championship, often referred to as the fifth major.

Another fifth major winner, Henrik Stenson, is also in the field.

"Davis and I are extremely excited to introduce the PGA Tour family to Georgia's beautiful Golden Isles," tournament director Mark Love said in a release.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.mcgladreyclassic.com. Friday is the last day to purchase tickets to be mailed. Tickets purchased after Friday can be picked up at Will Call, located in the event parking area at McKinnon Airport, near the Sea Island Golf Club entrance.

Adams wins LWGA Stroke Play Title

In a closely contested two-day golf tournament at Colleton River's Nicklaus Course, Jennifer Adams of Belfair Golf Club outdistanced Sharon Son-Hing of Long Cove and Terrie Allemang and Robin McPhillips, both of Sea Pines Country Club, to capture the Lowcountry Women's Golf Association Stroke Play Championship.

Adams fired steady rounds of 75 and 76 to win by four strokes. A field of 50 of Beaufort County's top players competed on Sept. 19-20 for the title.

Nancy Sain of the Golf Club at Indigo Run won the first flight, Kim Pearson of Moss Creek won the second flight and Anita Jewell of the Golf Club at Indigo Run won the third flight.

PALMER, DELCHER GEARING UP FOR USGA SENIOR AMATEUR

Two Bluffton golfers will compete in the USGA Senior Amateur Championship, set for Oct. 2-7 at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club in Orlando, Fla. Bill Palmer qualified for the tournament with a 73 on Sept. 13 at Columbia Country Club. Duke Delcher made the cut with a 74 through a qualifier at Old Oaks Country Club in Purchase, N.Y.

LOCALS QUALIFY FOR SCGA MID AMATEUR

Four local golfers qualified for the South Carolina Golf Association Mid Amateur Championship on Tuesday at Santee National Golf Club in Santee.

Bluffton's Jeff Wong (73), Hilton Head Island's Gordon Gourley (74), Bluffton's J.D. Hoft (74) and Hilton Head's Gerry Pascale (76) all made the cut in the qualifier. Chesterfield's Joe Hendrick had the best score of the day with a 68.

The Mid Amateur is set for Oct. 8-10 at the Country Club of Spartanburg. The 54-hole tournament is for golfers age 30 and older.

AJGA DONATES CLOSE TO $30K FROM RECENT EVENT

The money raised during the AJGA Rolex Girls Junior Championship, held in June at Long Cove Club, was donated to local charities during an awards ceremony on Wednesday at the Long Cove clubhouse.

Nearly $30,000, the money was split between the Boys and Girls Club of Hilton Head, Hilton Head Junior Golf, LPGA Girls Golf and the South Carolina Junior Golf Association.

The balance was donated to the AJGA ACE Grant Program, which offers financial support to deserving young golfers who compete on the AJGA Tour.

LONG PLAYS IN BOBBY CHAPMAN INVITATIONAL

Bluffton's Wesley Long competed in the South Carolina Junior Golf Association's 16th annual Bobby Chapman Invitational over the weekend at the Country Club of Spartanburg.

Long fired a 75-74 -- 149, finishing 12 strokes behind winner Joseph Winslow of Overland Park, Kan.

The tournament featured top junior players from 17 states.

The tournament is held in honor of the late Robert H. Chapman Jr., the only person to serve as president of both the South Carolina Golf Association and the Carolinas Golf Association.

LOCALS FAIL TO QUALIFY FOR PGA PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The top 12 finishers in the Carolinas PGA Professional Championship, held last week at Grandfather Golf and Country Club in Linville, N.C., qualified for the PGA Professional National Championship, set for June 26-29 in Hershey, Pa.

No local golfers made the cut.

Bluffton's Matt Lucchesi did the best, tying for 34th place with a 230. Bluffton's Tom Logue tied for 48th with a 234 and Beaufort's Chris Byrd tied for 53rd with a 235.

Others that did not finish were Yemassee's Mark Tomedolskey, Bluffton's Evan Belcher, Beaufort's Jason Hildreth, Bluffton's Bryan Bessinger, Hilton Head's Ed Brill, Bluffton's Derrrick Garrou, Hilton Head's Bill Sampson and Bluffton's Benjamin Hoover.
